Kourtaliotiko
Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of Crete’s most breathtaking natural attractions, located in the southern part of the island near Rethymno. This dramatic canyon, carved by the Kourtaliotis River, features towering cliffs, stunning rock formations, and a series of small waterfalls that create a magical atmosphere. The gorge gets its name from the sound of the wind whistling through the rocks, resembling clapping hands (“kourtala” in Greek).
A well-maintained path leads visitors through the gorge, passing by the beautiful Agios Nikolaos Chapel and reaching the crystal-clear waters of the river. The hiking route is ideal for nature lovers, offering a chance to explore lush vegetation, rare wildlife, and breathtaking views. The river eventually flows into the famous Preveli Beach, where it forms a picturesque lagoon.
Whether you’re an adventure seeker or simply looking to experience Crete’s raw natural beauty, Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a must-visit destination!
