Matala
Matala is one of Crete’s most iconic beaches, known for its stunning golden sands, turquoise waters, and the famous caves carved into the cliffs. These caves, once used as Roman tombs, later became a refuge for hippies in the 1960s, giving the area a unique bohemian charm. Today, Matala offers a lively atmosphere with beachside tavernas, cafes, and shops, while visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the historic caves. The beach also hosts the annual Matala Beach Festival, attracting music lovers from all over the world.
